What is expected to happen in court today?

The trial of Ryan Giggs is expected to hear evidence from new prosecution witnesses today. 

They include Emma Greville who was allegedly assaulted by the former Manchester United star.

She is the sister of Giggs’s ex-girlfriend, Kate Greville, who also claims she was assaulted by the former footballer.

The court has previously heard 999 calls made by Emma Greville on the night of the alleged assaults in November 2020.

Ryan Giggs had “blood around his mouth” after he allegedly headbutted his ex-girlfriend, a court heard on Friday, as the footballer’s assault trial was shown video footage of his arrest. 

The court was also played two 999 calls recorded when officers responded to reports of a “domestic disturbance” at the home of the former Manchester United star in November 2020.

In a statement read to the court, a police officer called PC Howarth said that when he arrived at the property Giggs was at the door and “had blood around his mouth”.

He said Kate Greville was sitting on the floor of the kitchen and was “visibly upset”.

“I could see straight away she had a swollen top and bottom lip with significant bruising,” the officer said.

Hello and welcome to Sky News’ live coverage of the trial of Ryan Giggs.

The former Manchester United footballer is accused of using controlling and coercive behaviour against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

He is also charged with assaulting Ms Greville and her sister Emma.

Giggs denies the charges against him.

Ryan Giggs trial adjourned

The trial of Ryan Giggs has been adjourned and the jury has been sent home for the day.

The trial will resume at 10am on Monday when Sky News will continue its live coverage of the case.

Giggs was ‘calm’ and responded ‘coherently’ on night of alleged assault, police officer says

The trial of Ryan Giggs has resumed after lunch. 

PC Billington is resuming his evidence and is answering questions from Giggs’s defence barrister.

The officer confirms Giggs was “calm” and he was not stumbling when police spoke to him on the night of the alleged assault.

“He responded coherently,” the officer adds.

Giggs trial breaks for lunch

The trial of Ryan Giggs has broken for lunch and will resume shortly after 2pm.

Giggs appeared ‘intoxicated’ on night of alleged assault, says police officer

After a short break in proceedings, PC Billington is giving evidence in court. 

He confirms he attended Ryan Giggs’s address following a report of a “domestic disturbance” and an allegation of assault.

The police bodycam footage showing Giggs giving his account of the alleged assault incident is played to the court again.

The footage shows the officer ask Giggs for Kate Greville’s date of birth.

“Hers? I don’t know,” he replies.

Giggs tells the officer that Ms Greville “wouldn’t give me my phone for about half an hour”.

Giving evidence in court, PC Billington says he told Giggs he was being arrested.

Prosecutor Peter Wright QC asks the officer if he had formed an impression of Giggs’s state at the time.

PC Billington replies: “I believed he was intoxicated.”

The officer says he came to this conclusion because Giggs was “slow” in answering questions and “his eyes appeared slightly glazed”.

An officer tells Giggs there is “an allegation of assault” and the ex-footballer is going to be arrested and taken to a police station.

There is no reaction from Giggs as he is spoken to by the officer.

The former Manchester United player is then walked to a police van where he enters the vehicle.

Giggs told police of ‘tangle’ and ‘struggle’ with ex-girlfriend as bodycam footage played to trial

Police bodycam footage is being shown to the trial of Ryan Giggs from the night he allegedly headbutted his ex-girlfriend Kate Greviille.

Ms Greville can be seen sitting on the floor of the kitchen while she talks to an officer. 

Further footage shows an officer walk into the property where Giggs is standing and he asks the ex-footballer: “What’s been going on?”

Giggs, wearing a white shirt, says he has been out for a meal with his then-partner and had a “few drinks in town”, while her sister looked after their dog at the house.

He says he and Ms Greville had an argument and she had “accused me of a couple of things”.

Giggs tells the officer that he had asked Ms Greville to leave the property and she had his phone and they “got into a little bit of a tangle”.

He says he tried to get his phone off her and there was a “struggle on the floor”.

Giggs says “she kicked me in the head” and “bust my lip”.

The officer asks: “What’s your name, mate?”

He replies: “Ryan Giggs.”
